Prosthodontist vs. Dentist: What’s the Difference?

Most dental procedures, such as root canals or periodontal care, can be easily completed by a general dentist.

But some dental interventions can only be performed by a specialist who has received special training in tooth restoration and tooth replacement. And the right person for that is a prosthodontist. The name “prosthodontist” comes from the word “prostho, ” which refers to a method of replacement, combined with the word “dentist,” which refers to teeth.

From this, it can be deduced that a prosthodontist deals with any dental intervention that involves the replacement of a tooth.

The range of services offered by a prosthodontist includes the following:

Replacing a Single Tooth

This usually involves placing a dental implant and then capping it with a dental crown that will replace the missing tooth.

Replacement of Several Lost Teeth

If you are missing more than just one tooth then you will probably need a dental implant bridge. This is a complex and extensive procedure and may require up to six months to complete.

Full Arch Replacement

Whether it is all of your teeth on one jaw or both jaws, some patients need a full mouth reconstruction.

Dentures can be a good solution in this case and can even be anchored with dental implants.

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMJ/TMD)

TMJ disorders affect the temporomandibular joint, of which the main role is to connect the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull.

If the muscles that control this joint become compromised in any way, either from disease, stress, arthritis in the joint, or teeth grinding, then a prosthodontist can help.

Why Go to a Prosthodontist

Many Dallas dentists can also offer some or all of these services. But unlike a dentist, a prosthodontist is an expert who specializes only in these procedures.

There are many differences between a dentist and a prosthodontist, and some of them are:

  • Institutions that have been accredited by the American Dental Association deal with the training and education of those who want to become a prosthodontist. A dentist is not required to attend these courses;
  • Interventions that are considered more complicated, such as jaw surgery, dentures, or dental implants, require the help of an expert, and that is a prosthodontist;
  • A prosthodontist can also offer services such as veneers, dental implants, or bridges.
