What are the Qualifications For a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontics is a dental specialty that requires additional training beyond a four-year dental degree (DMD or DDS). After graduating with a dental degree, a prosthodontist must enter an accredited prosthodontics residency program. These typically last 3 years. In this program, the prosthodontist will gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in the latest developments in prosthodontics. This specialty focuses on repairing damaged teeth and restoring missing teeth.  After 3 years, the residency is complete, but the prosthodontist must still pass several exams before being accepted as a board-certified prosthodontist. Only after doing so can they call themselves a prosthodontist, and begin practicing on patients.

What Makes A Prosthodontist Different From A Dentist?

Both prosthodontists and general dentists can replace missing teeth. It’s common for general dentists to offer treatments like dental implants, crowns, dentures, and so on. But that doesn’t mean that they are the same. The difference is that general dentists provide restorative care along with lots of other services. As the name implies, they’re generalists. Prosthodontists are not. They don’t usually clean teeth, treat gum disease, or provide Invisalign treatment. Instead, they focus on repairing and restoring damaged or lost teeth, day in and day out. Not only do they have more education in this field, but they have a lot more expertise in the day-to-day treatment of these conditions. That means they can provide better overall results. Restoring damaged and missing teeth is their specialty!
