My Invisalign Trays Aren’t Fitting! What Do I Do? 4 Steps To Take

If you’re getting Invisalign treatment in Dallas, Highland Park or Turtle Creek and you’ve noticed that your trays don’t seem to be fitting onto your teeth properly, you may not know what to do. But in this guide from White Dental Spa, we’ll discuss a few steps you should take to resolve the issue, and get your orthodontic treatment back on track.

  1. Start By Trying Invisalign “Chewies” To Seat Your Aligners Properly

It’s quite common for a new set of aligners to be quite tight. In some cases, your Invisalign aligners may not “seat” onto your teeth properly, and you might see gaps between the aligner and your teeth.

The first thing you should try is using Invisalign “chewies.” You can get these from your dentist. These soft pieces of foam look like a cotton roll. They’re intended to help your aligners fit over your teeth when they’re very tight. You simply chew on one for about 5-10 minutes, and the pressure of doing so will force your aligners over your teeth, even if they are very tight.

In addition, chewing on a chewie can help you get relief from the tightness of switching to a new set of aligners. Give this a try, and see if your aligners will fit onto your teeth properly.

  1. Make Sure You’re Wearing Your Invisalign Trays For At Least 20-22 Hours Per Day

Your treatment plan is designed with a daily aligner wear time of 20-22 hours in mind. If you’re not wearing your aligners for this period of time, your treatment may fall behind, which could cause your aligners to fit improperly.

Ideally, you should only remove your aligners to eat and drink (except for water), and to brush, floss, and clean the aligners. If you don’t wear your aligners properly, your new sets of aligners may not fit properly.

  1. Ask Your Dentist About “Backtracking”

If you’re wearing your aligners properly and you can’t get them to fit even with chewies, it’s possible that you may need to “backtrack” to your previous set of aligners. Wearing a previous set of aligners for a week or two may allow your treatment to “catch up,” and ensure that your next set of aligners will fit properly.

However, don’t do this without consulting with your dentist, such as Dr. E-Jan Tung or Dr. Quinn Liu. They may ask you to come in for an appointment so that you can have your progress checked.

  1. Get An Invisalign Treatment Revision From Your Dentist

If none of the above options work, your dentist will likely need to revise your Invisalign treatment, and get you a few new sets of aligners. While the computer programs used to plan Invisalign treatment are very advanced, each patient is different.

If one or more of your teeth is particularly stubborn or hard to move, your dentist will work with Invisalign to modify your treatment plan accordingly, and ensure that your treatment continues to go smoothly.
