How Long Do Veneers Last?

For those experiencing dental imperfections like discoloration, abnormally small teeth, or are just dissatisfied with their shape, veneers offer the perfect cosmetic solution. However, there is also an alternative to veneers, called lumineers.

While lumineers are made of thinner material and can be even more costly than veneers, they can last for twice as long and require less commitment. Instead of shaving down your enamel, lumineers may require no prep work of your natural teeth and the procedure is reversible. Read on to find out more about veneers and lumineers.

Veneers

Porcelain veneers are false teeth that are bonded to your natural teeth. They cover up dental imperfections like discoloration or uneven tooth size and shape. People may choose veneers to achieve a permanently white smile without having to repeatedly go for expensive teeth whitening treatments.

However, veneers are a permanent procedure that should be given a lot of thought before committing. To fit the veneers in your mouth without compromising your bite, your natural tooth enamel will be shaved down by .5mm. Because enamel does not grow back, the alteration to your teeth is permanent, even if you decide you no longer want veneers later on.

How Long Do They Last?

How long veneers last depend on the material they are made of. Most veneers are made out of porcelain and last from 7-15 years. Other veneers are made of composite resin materials, which have a much shorter lifespan, lasting just 4-8 years.

The difference in lifespan can be attributed to the durability of materials. Composite resin is a mix of resin and plastic, which is not only less durable than porcelain but is also more vulnerable to stains.

While porcelain veneers look more natural, last longer, and are stain-resistant, composite resin veneers can be repaired if they are chipped or cracked. In contrast, porcelain veneers need to be replaced altogether.

Lumineers

Lumineers are similar to veneers in that they are artificial teeth that are bonded to your enamel to cover up your natural teeth. The difference lies in the thickness of materials, durability, and required prep work.

Lumineers are made of ultra-thin ceramic material, though they are still incredibly durable. While their thin material means you will need little to no prep work of your enamel (no shaving) as well as looking more natural, it also means they are less capable of covering stained teeth. If you have severely discolored teeth, these may be seen through the lumineers.

How Long Do They Last?

Lumineers last much longer than veneers because they are extremely durable and resistant to wear and tear. Porcelain is one of the most vulnerable materials to chipping and cracking which can be a risk when taking such an investment.

When choosing lumineers, you can be assured that your investment will last for more than 20 years. They are also reversible because they do not require the shaving down of your natural enamel.

Which is the Right Choice For Me?

Choosing between veneers and lumineers comes down to what your priorities are. If you’re most concerned with affordability, adequate masking of dental imperfections, and stain resistance, then veneers are the better choice for you.

Comparatively, if you don’t feel comfortable committing to permanently altering your natural tooth enamel, looking for better durability, and a longer lifespan, lumineers would be the most suitable option.
