Are Veneers Permanent?
If you’re looking for a dental cosmetic procedure to give you a Hollywood smile, then look no further than veneers. They are a great and popular solution to address even cosmetic dental issues.
However, there is a bit of misconception surrounding them, and it’s important to fully understand what veneers entail before you get on board. In this short blog post, we’ll answer the most common question patients have about veneers:
Are they permanent?
Well, the short answer is yes, veneers are a permanent procedure. But if we break it down, it’s a bit more complicated.
Veneers Cannot Be Reversed
Veneers are porcelain prosthetics that get glued to the natural surface of your teeth. For this procedure to work, the natural tooth enamel must be shaved down in order to create a rougher surface, so that the veneers and bonding agents can properly stick to the teeth.
Your tooth’s enamel does not grow back, so as a result, getting veneers is permanent. If you want to remove them, you’ll either need to get a new pair of veneers or opt for another permanent cosmetic solution.
You will not be able to revert back to your natural smile after getting veneers in Dallas, even if modern solutions don’t require a lot of enamel shaving.
Veneers Are Not Indestructible
Some patients wonder if veneers are permanent in the sense of whether they can last a lifetime. Well, it’s important to note that veneers are not indestructible. They can chip or even break, but the right care can extend their lifespan tremendously. Many people wear their veneers for 10-15 years, maybe even longer, without experiencing any problem with them.
Here are some ways to take good care of your veneers:
- Good oral hygiene, such as brushing at least 2 times a day with a soft-bristled brush.
- Avoiding chewing on very hard foods, and this can lead to chips and even cracks.
- Be careful with staining foods, as they can change the look of the veneers.
- See your dentist routinely, and have your veneers inspected to ensure nothing is going on with them.
Am I a Good Candidate for Veneers?
Veneers are great options to address a variety of issues:
- Misshapen teeth
- Cracks or chips
- Gaps between teeth
- Severely stained teeth
- Certain issues with alignment, etc.
If these sound like the kind of problems you are dealing with, then veneers are likely a great option for you. However, before getting veneers your dentist will likely take an x-ray of your mouth to make sure your teeth are healthy. Veneers do not address issues such as cavities, infections, severe misalignment, or extensive damage.
