The 4 Most Common Myths About Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry in Dallas is a great thing, especially for patients who may have dental anxiety and are nervous about upcoming dental procedures. But there are a lot of myths and misconceptions out there surrounding sedation at the dentist. So in this blog from White Dental Spa, we’ll debunk a few of these myths, and explain why they’re wrong. Let’s get started!

1. There’s Only One Kind Of Dental Sedation

This is not true! There are lots of different types of dental sedation. At White Dental Spa, we offer:

  • Nitrous oxide sedation, which uses nitrous oxide (laughing gas) delivered through a nose mask to keep you feeling comfortable.
  • Oral conscious sedation, which uses a pill-based sedative that will make you feel drowsy, fall asleep, and forget what happens during your procedure.

Some dentists even offer IV sedation and general anesthesia for certain dental procedures. The best way to determine the right option for you is to consult with your dentist.

2. You Can Only Be Sedated For Complex Dental Procedures

This isn’t true, either! At White Dental Spa, Dr. E-Jan Tung and Dr. Quinn Liu can offer sedation for just about any procedure, even simple, routine procedures like getting a dental filling or even a teeth cleaning.

If you’re nervous about seeing the dentist and want to relax, sedation is a great option, and we’re happy to serve anxious patients throughout Highland Park, Uptown, Turtle Creek, Oaklawn, and surrounding cities in Dallas with the treatment they need.

3. You Can’t Drive Home After Sedation Dentistry

This is partially true. If you choose oral conscious sedation at White Dental Spa, you must have someone bring you to and from your appointment at our office. The side effects of this type of sedation last 4-6 hours or longer, so it is not safe for you to drive home.

However, laughing gas sedation wears off after just a few minutes. If you choose this method of sedation, you can drive home or even go back to work right after your appointment.

4. Sedation Dentistry Is Unsafe

This is not true. The sedative medications used for sedation dentistry have been in use for decades, and Dallas dentists like Dr. Tung and Dr. Liu have lots of experience administering sedation.  Serious complications are extremely rare.

However, it is true that sedation dentistry is not for everyone. Certain medical conditions, medications and supplements, pregnancy, and a few other factors may mean that sedation is not a good choice for you. This is why Dr. Tung or Dr. Liu will discuss your overall health with you before deciding whether or not you can be sedated at our office.
